Uganda Airlines achieved a significant milestone on Saturday as they embarked on their inaugural direct flight to India from Entebbe. Captain Robert Wakhweya Bwayo piloted the Mumbai-bound flight, which was officially launched in the presence of the Minister for Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala.
A total of 58 passengers were on board for the six-and-a-half-hour journey. Minister Edward Katumba Wamala bid farewell to the flight before boarding the Uganda Airlines Airbus for the historic journey.
Prior to the departure of the Uganda Airlines Airbus, a ceremonial event marked the occasion, celebrating the launch of this new flight route, which is expected to enhance travel and trade between Uganda and India.
Minister Wamala highlighted the significance of the route, noting that many Ugandans study in India, while others seek medical treatment in the world’s largest democracy. Similarly, many Indians visit Uganda for business, tourism, and various other purposes. The direct flight on Uganda Airlines is seen as a means to strengthen the ties between the two nations and bolster their partnership.
Uganda Airlines CEO, Jenifer Bamuturaki, expressed optimism that this new route to Mumbai, the second international route after Dubai, and the 12th route in total, will contribute to Uganda Airlines’ profitability in the aviation industry. The airline plans to operate flights on the Entebbe-Mumbai route three times a week, allowing passengers to travel conveniently on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
The launch ceremony at Entebbe Airport was attended by several Indian business figures who viewed this development as a significant breakthrough. Additionally, Upender Singh Rawat, the Indian High Commissioner to Uganda, and Bradford Ocheng, the deputy CEO of Uganda Tourism Board, were present.
Adedayo Olawuyi, the chief commercial officer of Uganda Airlines, disclosed that the maiden flight would return on Tuesday, carrying five tonnes of cargo.
