The Uganda Police Force Marine Unit has announced plans to bolster security measures to safeguard passengers’ lives in response to the alarming frequency of accidents on Lake Victoria.
Mr. Anthony Amanya, spokesperson for the Uganda Police Force Marine Unit, outlined their commitment to enhancing security protocols on boats operating within Lake Victoria. He stressed the importance of collaboration with local leaders, particularly those overseeing landing sites, to enforce regulations prohibiting nighttime travel on the lake.
“We believe the beach management leadership is supposed to assist us in ensuring that they stop anyone who wants to travel on the water at night,” stated Mr. Amanya during a media briefing on Wednesday.
The announcement comes in the aftermath of a tragic boat accident that occurred early Tuesday morning, resulting in the loss of six lives. The ill-fated boat, carrying 17 passengers from Bussi Island to the Nakiwogo landing site, capsized after encountering turbulent waves.
Efforts to mitigate such incidents include urging local leaders to ensure passengers only travel in licensed boats that are deemed seaworthy. Mr. Amanya emphasized the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and community leaders to uphold safety standards.
Survivors of the recent accident recounted harrowing experiences, emphasizing the need for proactive measures to prevent future tragedies. Ms. Irene Akankwasa, one of the survivors, expressed gratitude for being rescued but highlighted the perilous conditions they faced.
Despite efforts to respond promptly to emergencies, criticism has been directed at the Marine Police Unit for perceived delays in their intervention. Local officials lamented that more lives could have been saved with swifter action.
Tragically, incidents of boat accidents on Lake Victoria have claimed numerous lives in recent years, highlighting the urgency of implementing robust safety measures. The authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to prevent further loss of life on Uganda’s water bodies.
