Property Worth Millions in Ruins as Historic 100 Year Masindi Hotel Faces Devastation

In a shocking incident that left a historic landmark in ruins, a driver of a South Sudan-registered truck (SSD080A) has been apprehended by the Masindi police after crashing into what is believed to be the oldest hotel in Uganda. The collision with the hotel, established in 1923 in Masindi town, has resulted in the destruction of property valued at millions.

At approximately 3:30 am on Friday morning, the truck from South Sudan plowed through the wall of the iconic courtyard bar, famously known as Hemingway’s Bar of Masindi Hotel. According to one of the hotel managers, who wished to remain anonymous, the driver and turnboy claimed that the steering wheel had jammed and the brakes failed as they attempted to evade four other illegally parked trucks along the roadside.

This tragic accident occurred just as the hotel was gearing up to commemorate its remarkable 100 years of existence. As the oldest hotel in Uganda, the loss incurred is immeasurable, with elements such as the unique tiled roof considered irreplaceable.

The manager expressed hope that, as they celebrate a century as a National Heritage Site, authorities will finally acknowledge the situation and provide substantial assistance. Albertine Police region spokesperson Allan Hakiza confirmed the arrest of both the driver and the turnman, who are currently detained at Masindi Central Police Station. Fortunately, there were no reported fatalities in this incident.
