(Australia) – Cassius, the world’s largest captive crocodile, has died in Australia at the age of 110. Known for his impressive size and record-holding status, Cassius was a saltwater crocodile who lived in the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat on Green Island, near Cairns, Queensland.

Cassius measured 5.48 meters (18 feet) in length and weighed over a ton. He had resided in the wildlife sanctuary for more than 37 years, captivating visitors with his enormous presence. The sanctuary announced his passing on social media, sharing that Cassius had been in declining health since October 15.

The sanctuary’s Facebook post reflected on Cassius’s long life, noting, “He was very old and believed to be living beyond the years of a wild croc.” Cassius was originally captured in the nearby Northern Territory, an area known for its crocodile population and its significance to the local tourism industry.

Cassius achieved worldwide fame as he held the Guinness World Records title for the largest crocodile in captivity, a title he earned after the passing of another giant crocodile, Lolong, from the Philippines in 2013. Lolong measured 6.17 meters (20 feet 3 inches) long, but Cassius was recognized for his remarkable size during his lifetime.

The loss of Cassius has left a deep impact on the sanctuary staff and visitors. The statement concluded, “Cassius will be deeply missed, but our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever.”
