Two Ntungamo District councillors died in a fatal car accident on Monday. They were Niwagaba Pius Tusimire, the Local Council V councillor for Nyarutuuntu sub-county, and Kutamba Monic Rutabingwa, the lady LCV councillor for Ngoma sub-county.
The accident occurred 4km from Ntungamo municipality when the Toyota Wish they were travelling in rammed into a box body motor vehicle. According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the Toyota Wish was speeding in the rain and lost control of the vehicle when he swerved into the lane of oncoming traffic.
Both councillors were killed on the spot. The team from Uganda police Ntungamo rushed to the scene and took the bodies of the deceased to Itojo Hospital for post-mortem.
The Ntungamo District chairman Samuel Mucunguzi Rwakigoba said that they were traumatized and shocked by the accident. He described the two councillors as transparent and hardworking.
Naboth Mpiriirwe, councillor for the Ntungamo sub-county, described the accident as a double tragedy for the district council. He said that the two councillors were vital in the discussions.
The district speaker Twikiriize Nicholas Mugyenyi said that there will be a special council meeting on Wednesday to pay tribute to both councilors.
The Education and Health Committee chairman who is also a councilor for Ruhaama Sub County Ahabwe Bernard Mupenda, said that the accident was shocking and beyond human understanding.
By press time, the police were still compiling the report.
