The 2023 Uganda Ladies Open Golf Championship is set to begin at the Uganda Golf Club’s par 72 course in Kitante, Kampala, with participants from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Sweden, Burundi, and Rwanda. However, the tournament faces a challenging start due to heavy rain that has flooded various parts of the golf course.
Martha Babirye, a three-time winner of the prestigious Ladies Golf tournament in 2019, 2020, and 2022, is considered the favorite to clinch her fourth title despite a strong foreign contingent this year. Babirye expressed her readiness for the tournament and her determination to secure another victory.
In addition to Babirye, other top contenders include Peace Amooti Kabasweka, Eva Magala (the reigning UGC Ladies Open Champion), Judith Komugisha, Melon Kyomugisha, and the Tanzanian duo of Iddi Madina and Tz Ladies Open Champion Vicky Elias, as well as Kenya’s Martha Nyanchama.
Notably, Alice Kego holds the record for the most wins in the tournament, with 12 victories, while Flavia Namakula has five wins to her name.
Uganda Breweries Limited, through their luxury brand Johnnie Walker, is the main sponsor of the tournament, with support from other sponsors such as Absa Bank Uganda, Orchard Interiors, NBS Sports Pinnacle Security, Crown Beverages, Case Medical Service, HTC Hub, NCS, Royal and Ancient.
