A contingent of six players is gearing up to participate in the inaugural Egyptian International Tournament scheduled to take place from January 22 to 28 in Cairo. Despite a relatively brief training period at the Lugogo Indoor Arena, the athletes are resolute in their pursuit of a podium finish, driven by the ambition to accrue crucial points for qualification to the Paris 2024 Paralympics.

The team comprises five talented female players: Rita Asiimwe, Elizabeth Mwesigwa, Rose Nansereko, Shamim Mutesi, and Sarah Nazziwa. Additionally, the male representation features Hassan Mubiru and Ali Mukasa. Accompanying the squad is Coach Mark Sekyondwa, providing guidance and strategic support.

Despite the time constraints, Coach Sekyondwa expressed confidence in the team’s preparedness. He highlighted the players’ valuable international exposure gained through participation in three Uganda International events in Kampala, as well as the Dubai International Tournament held in December of the previous year. Such experiences have undoubtedly contributed to the players’ skill development and readiness for the upcoming challenge in Egypt.

The imminent journey to Egypt holds significance beyond the pursuit of victory. The players’ primary objective is to secure vital points that will enhance their prospects of qualifying for the prestigious Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The competition in Cairo serves as a pivotal platform for these para-badminton enthusiasts to showcase their talent on an international stage and make strides towards Paralympic qualification.
