The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) is calling for immediate government action to implement electoral reforms in anticipation of the 2026 general elections. The party asserts that such reforms are crucial to establishing a fair and balanced political environment, ensuring the smooth conduct of campaigns and the polling process.
The demand for electoral reforms was underscored during a press conference on January 10 at the party’s headquarters in Kampala. Faizo Muzeyi, the Head of Media and Communication for UPC, emphasized the necessity of these reforms in the lead-up to the 2025/2026 general elections.
Muzeyi highlighted an example where political parties with representation in parliament receive assistance from the treasury for various daily tasks. He referred to Section 14 A (b) of the Political Parties and Organizations Act, which mandates the government to provide equal financial support to political organizations and parties. However, Muzeyi noted that this provision has yet to be put into practice.
Stressing the need for concerted efforts from all key stakeholders, Muzeyi called for decisive actions to enhance the electoral process. He also drew attention to the potential impact of postponed Women Council Committees and Local Council 1 and 2 elections, warning of a congested national electoral roadmap.
In its preparations for the 2026 polls, UPC initiated national mobilization tours last year. Muzeyi urged the government and political parties to engage in comprehensive discussions regarding the delayed elections and explore effective ways to secure resources for financing the electoral commission’s roadmap.
