On Saturday, the 27th, during the burial of MP Cecilia Atim Ogwal at Alito town council, the issue of Akii-Bua stadium construction was a concern for many mourners.
During her address to the mourners, Her Excellency the Vice President of the Republic of Uganda, Jessica Alupo, responded to several concerns raised by different speakers, including the issue of Akii-Bua Stadium Construction, as outlined below:
“So, I would like to assure the people of Lango that the government will construct Akii-Bua stadium. I would like you to look into government programs that have been expeditiously implemented here in Lango, including the very pertinent program that the people of Lango were very impatient about – making Lira University an independent university. His Excellency the President expeditiously handled it, and now there is harmony between the people of Lango and the government. So, I want to give you hope that the government will work on Akii-Bua stadium as pledged by H.E the President,” said Her Excellency the VP Jessica Alupo.
“So, we are going to start from where that work stops, and His Excellency the President himself is also coming soon to Lango sub-region for his wealth creation program, and at that time, we shall have a clear position about Akii-Bua stadium construction. So, I call upon you to be patient. We shall deliver on Akii-Bua stadium. I call upon you to be patient and work closely with all the leaders, including the LCV, members of parliament, and the Ministers,” added Alupo.
In an exclusive interview with the Minister of Education and Sports, Minister Peter Ogwang reassured the people of Lango to have hope that Akii-Bua Stadium will be constructed.
“I am Hon. Peter Ogwang, a Member of Parliament and a Minister. First of all, I want to reiterate the commitment of the President to the people of Lango sub-region and my senior minister, the Minister of Education and Sports, that the government will fulfill the pledge of constructing Akii-Bua Stadium. As of now, we are meant to have a final meeting in which the President is calling on leaders of Lango for that specific subject matter. I thank you so much,” said Ogwang.
The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, narrated that “in their meeting, they had talked with the President about Akii-Bua Stadium Construction, and the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament again spoke about it to the President when he came to Parliament. He said, ‘after all this, he is going to meet the MPs of Lango about it.’ Tayebwa added that as Parliament, they are going to support the people of Lango regarding the issue of Akii-Bua stadium.
During his speech before the people at Alito on Saturday, Kole LCV Chairman Andrew Awany requested that Akii-Bua stadium be considered and constructed by the government.
“We pray that equal allocation of resources be provided, and this stadium should be built because it will be for the good of this country,” added Awany.
Recently, Lango Activists led by Workers’ Representative Hon. Sarah Awor Angweri, former Oyam MP Hon. Issa Otto, and Mr. Mawa Moses (NUP) voiced their concern about the exclusion of Akii-Bua stadium construction from the AFCON 2027 Pamoja bid and threatened to organize a demonstration in Lira City to address their concern.
