KAMWENGE, Uganda – Chaos within the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) in Kamwenge District has forced some candidates to run independently after a key party official reportedly disappeared with a crucial nomination stamp.
Muhammed Ruto, ANT’s district coordinator, revealed the disruption during an interview with New Vision Online on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at Ntara Town Council, where ANT presidential candidate Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Gregory Mugisha Muntu was campaigning.
“By the time I arrived, it was too late. Many candidates had already gone independent. In Kamwenge, we have around 13 independents,” Ruto explained.
One of the independent candidates, Abdu Magezi, who is contesting for Kahunge Town Council, received Muntu during his campaign in the area on Sunday. Muntu, who has previously endorsed candidates in areas where ANT has no representation, including the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) and National Unity Platform (NUP), extended his endorsement to Magezi.
“If he is a man who is calm and independent, vote for him. If he were from the Movement, I wouldn’t have done so,” Muntu told area residents.
Magezi, running on an independent ticket, said, “I am standing to liberate Kahunge Town Council, and my symbol is a radio, which reaches where a bus cannot.”
He emphasized his commitment to bringing fresh leadership to the area and encouraged residents to support candidates who prioritize integrity, accountability, and effective service delivery.
