The National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy Spokesperson and Nakawa East MP hopeful, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, on Wednesday morning appeared before the Nakawa Magistrates Court, where he was charged with inciting NUP supporters to commit acts of violence against security officers.
Mufumbiro was arrested last month and has been on remand since then, with his detention likely to extend even as nominations for the Nakawa East parliamentary seat get underway.
The NUP deputy spokesperson, who is contesting on the party’s ticket, is also facing separate charges related to military-style training and is currently on remand at Luzira Prison.
He is also scheduled to appear later today before the Kawempe Magistrates Court alongside nine other suspects in a separate case.
At Nakawa, Grade One Magistrate Frank Nahamya read out the charge of incitement to violence, to which Mufumbiro pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors allege that on September 4, 2025, while in Kampala, Mufumbiro urged NUP supporters to target security personnel, an act they say amounted to incitement.
Magistrate Nahamya remanded Mufumbiro until November 6, 2025, to allow for the completion of police investigations.
Meanwhile, Mufumbiro’s legal team has vowed to apply for bail and challenge what they describe as politically motivated charges aimed at frustrating his parliamentary bid. Supporters outside the court expressed optimism that he would soon be released to continue his campaign.
