During the 35th Heroes Day celebrations at Mpenja Church of Uganda Primary School playgrounds, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni attributed the success of the National Resistance Movement/Army (NRA) during the liberation war to the principles it upheld. He emphasized the importance of patriotism, Pan-Africanism, and the vision to build a new society as guiding principles that enabled the NRA to succeed.

Reflecting on the significance of Gomba during the liberation struggle, President Museveni noted its role as a corridor for recruits from the South West to the Luwero area. He encouraged Ugandans to embrace government programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga, aimed at enhancing livelihoods and fostering development at the grassroots level.

Hon. Alice Kaboyo, the Minister of State for Luwero Triangle/Rwenzori Region, underscored the importance of promoting peace and unity for sustainable socio-economic transformation. She highlighted the ongoing support provided by the Office of the Prime Minister, particularly through the Luwero Triangle/Rwenzori region Ministry, in assisting civilian veterans and communities. This support includes initiatives such as constructing low-cost houses to improve living conditions.

As part of the commemorations, President Museveni laid a wreath at the monument dedicated to freedom fighters who lost their lives during the liberation war. This gesture honored their sacrifices and contributions to the nation’s freedom and development.

Additionally, forty-nine individuals were recognized and awarded medals for their exceptional contributions to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation. Among the recipients were Sheikh Mohammed Bin Maktoum Bin Jumah Al Maktoum from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Hon. Joyce Ssebougwawo, acknowledging their significant roles in various fields.

The event drew various dignitaries, including Vice President Jessica Alupo, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, NRM First National Vice Chairman Alhaj Moses Kigongo, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, as well as ministers, religious leaders, cultural leaders, members of the diplomatic corps, and other esteemed guests.
