Who is Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, the New Deputy Governor of Bank of Uganda?

Professor Augustus Nuwagaba has been appointed the new Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda. His extensive experience across Africa is expected to be a significant asset in shaping the country’s economic policies. Nuwagaba is a renowned economist and international consultant on economic transformation.

Early Life and Education




Born in Kabale Municipality, Uganda, in 1964, Nuwagaba’s academic excellence and professional achievements have earned him prominence.




He attended Kigezi High School from 1979 to 1985, serving as head prefect. He later graduated from Makerere University’s Faculty of Social Sciences in 1989.




Nuwagaba pursued further studies, earning a Master of Science degree from the London School of Economics.

He returned to Makerere University to complete a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Economics, specializing in inclusive growth and poverty eradication.

He also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute, with a focus on monetary policy and commercial bank competitiveness.




Career and Expertise

A leading expert in economic transformation, Nuwagaba has worked extensively with governments and international organizations throughout Africa. His expertise includes fiscal policy, financial management, and economic development.

He has provided consultancy services on fiscal metrics, financial performance, and tax policies, and has served as a managing consultant at REEV Consult International Limited, a private consultancy firm in Uganda.




Nuwagaba’s career is marked by numerous achievements. He is a recipient of the International Award for Significant Contribution to World Society and is listed in Who’s Who in the World (2004). His consultancy work includes partnerships with organizations such as the African Peer Review Mechanism under NEPAD, the World Bank, and the East African Community.

He has also led projects such as the FINSCOPE Financial Penetration Project (2013) and the development of a financial management and training manual for Parliamentary Accountability Committees.

Additionally, Nuwagaba contributed to the mid-term review of Uganda’s National Development Plan (2010–2014) and helped formulate the East African Community Development Investment Plan (2016–2020).

A Strategic Appointment

As the newly appointed Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Professor Augustus Nuwagaba is expected to utilize his extensive experience and expertise to shape the country’s economic policies.







His appointment is considered strategic, given his background as a seasoned economist and international consultant on economic transformation.
