The Uganda Tourism Board has launched the Explore Uganda app, designed to promote the country's attractions and enhance the tourism experience for potential visitors.

(Kampala) – The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) recently launched the Explore Uganda app at an event held at Mestil Hotel, attended by tour operators, ambassadors, ministers, and other stakeholders in the tourism sector. The celebration featured lively performances by the Crane Band, enhancing the festive atmosphere despite intermittent rain and thunder.

The event began with a cocktail reception, during which the evening’s master of ceremonies, Mich Egwang, engaged guests by encouraging them to greet someone they did not know at their table. He explained the cultural significance of hospitality among various Ugandan communities, noting that offering a warm welcome is a longstanding tradition.

Lilly Ajarova, the CEO of the Uganda Tourism Board, introduced the app, emphasizing its role in showcasing Uganda’s attractions, which contribute to its reputation as “The Pearl of Africa.” Ajarova expressed pride that the app was developed by an all-female team, highlighting the importance of women’s contributions to the industry. “This app serves as a platform to inform potential visitors about what makes Uganda so special, whether they’re planning a trip from their living rooms, the park, or at the beach,” she said.

Ajarova pointed out the need for Uganda to adapt to the digital landscape of tourism. The Minister of State for Tourism shared in the excitement, enjoying performances by the Crane Band, which provided vibrant local music.

The Minister highlighted the diverse attractions available in Uganda, stating, “Whether it’s bird watching, exploring butterflies and dragonflies, or immersing in the country’s rich culture, there’s no shortage of experiences.” He mentioned the ten national parks and other natural features, explaining that the app will help users navigate to these destinations and understand what to expect upon arrival.

During a panel discussion, Richard Kawere, Principal of the Uganda School of Tourism and Hotels, noted that the app addresses many common inquiries from tourists. He explained that travelers often ask about air travel, accommodation, food, and health services. “This app will not only streamline the industry’s operations but also provide much-needed exposure for our tourism sector,” Kawere stated.

Dennis Ntege, a rafting business owner, added that the app would highlight a range of attractions beyond the well known Source of the Nile and white water rafting in Jinja. He emphasized the rich cultural experiences available in the Busoga region, including the annual Nyege Nyege festival, horse riding, quad biking, and tubing on the Nile. “Visitors need more than 30 days to fully explore Busoga’s attractions,” he noted, mentioning various accommodation options from tents to three-star hotels.

Charlotte Beuvoism, a participant at the event, voiced her hopes for the app, stressing the importance of keeping the information current. “Considering the key source markets for tourists, the app must be constantly updated with accurate, up to date information,” she said. “Tourists today do extensive research before visiting a destination.”
