Starlink Could Change Everything for Uganda’s Internet Access

The Ankole Times

Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture, Starlink,  officially submitted a license application to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) in a move that could transform the country’s digital landscape.

If approved, the service aims to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet to remote and underserved areas through its cutting-edge low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network.

Operated by SpaceX, Starlink’s technology circumvents traditional infrastructure limitations, often outperforming conventional fiber or mobile networks in terms of speed and reliability. This innovation holds particular promise for rural communities in Uganda, where limited connectivity has long been a barrier to digital progress.

Uganda’s growing digital economy—driven by e-commerce, telemedicine, e-learning, and remote work—could see major gains from Starlink’s entry, helping bridge the digital divide between urban and rural areas.

The UCC will now review the application for technical and financial compliance, a necessary step for all telecom service providers. If granted, Starlink would join the ranks of local Internet Service Providers (ISPs), contributing to the country’s efforts toward nationwide digital inclusion.

However, despite the promise, concerns remain over affordability. Starlink’s relatively high upfront costs for hardware and installation may limit access for lower-income users. Still, analysts believe the competition it introduces could lead to more affordable pricing and improved service quality across the industry.

As the regulatory process unfolds, many Ugandans are hopeful that Starlink will help fast-track the nation’s digital transformation, aligning with Uganda’s broader goals for universal connectivity and a tech-enabled future.
