Ukrainian Defence Forces have eliminated Buvaysar Khasanovich Umkhanov, the commander of a battalion within Russia’s notorious Akhmat Brigade, during a targeted strike in Russia’s Kursk region. The news was announced by Apti Alaudinov on his official Telegram account.
Umkhanov, who went by the call sign Tarzan, was killed during a strike on a Russian command post where his unit was stationed. He was a native of Grebenskaya village in the Shelkovskoy district of the Chechen Republic. His battalion formed part of the 4th Special Purpose Brigade Akhmat, operating under the direct control of the Russian Ministry of Defence.
Umkhanov had a dark record, having been involved in the looting and murder of Ukrainian civilians during Russia’s brutal 2022 invasion. He had been listed in Ukraine’s Myrotvorets database for his crimes against Ukrainian people.

The Akhmat unit operated in the Kursk region to maintain control over Russia’s state border. Despite Russian propaganda claiming control and stability in the area, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed that Ukrainian Defence Forces are actively operating within enemy territory, continuing to challenge Russian occupation forces.
Recent reports indicate that Ukraine’s 73rd Naval Special Operations Centre successfully conducted a raid in the Kursk region on 26 April, destroying a unit of the Russian 810th Marine Brigade.
Ukraine’s General Staff reported that by 27 April, five combat engagements had taken place in the Kursk region. Russian forces retaliated with one airstrike, dropping two guided bombs known as KABs, and carried out 140 artillery attacks, including seven using multiple launch rocket systems.
