(Nairobi) – Despite declining inflation rates globally in 2024, voter dissatisfaction with the high cost of living significantly impacted election outcomes worldwide, leading to shifts in political landscapes.
Driven by rising prices on essential goods and services, voters across the globe punished incumbent parties at the polls. The persistent burden of inflation became a central issue, leading to electoral consequences for governing parties in numerous elections. This voter sentiment transcended geographical and economic divides, affecting both developed and developing nations.
In the United States, concerns about the cost of living contributed to a former president’s return to the White House. This followed his departure from office four years prior after an election he contested. In 2021, his supporters attempted to overturn the election results with an incursion at the U.S. Capitol. This year, they expressed their views at the ballot box, ushering in a new administration.
Similar discontent over inflation resulted in new governments in the United Kingdom, Botswana, Portugal, and Panama. In South Korea, voters placed the opposition in control of the parliament, scrutinizing President Yoon Suk Yeol’s administration. Earlier in December, President Yeol declared martial law, a decision swiftly reversed by the parliament. Elections also brought changes and challenges in France, Germany, Japan, and India.
In Russia, President Vladimir Putin secured re-election with 88% of the vote. Moscow continued its conflict with Ukraine. Speculation arose regarding the potential impact of the U.S. presidential election results on the conflict. The elected president had previously pledged to resolve the war within a day, raising concerns among many in Ukraine and Europe that this could signal support for President Putin.
In the Middle East, Israel’s conflict with Gaza expanded into Lebanon. In Syria, a coordinated rebel group overthrew Bashar al-Assad and now seeks leadership of the country.
In the business world, companies worldwide grappled with the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
