On Monday morning, Kasana Junior Primary School in Nyendo-Mukungwe Division, Masaka City, fell victim to a fire that claimed the lives of seven individuals, according to a statement from the Police on Tuesday, October 31, 2023.

The victims identified so far are Augustine Hillary Walugembe, Arnold Tumwesigye, Austine Kisomose, Martin Muganga, and Jordan Ssendagala—all pupils from the nursery section, with Tumwesigye succumbing to injuries during transport to Kiruddu Hospital in Kampala.

Christine Adong, the school dormitory matron, is reported to be in critical condition at Masaka Hospital. The fire is believed to have originated from her phone while it was charging. A comprehensive investigation is currently underway, led by experts from the UPDF Armoured Brigade, Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), and the Police.

Pupils who survived the tragedy but remain in critical condition at Masaka Hospital include Paul Ssenogga, Elijah Ssemambo, Grant Matovu, and Alfah Wasswa. Their recovery is being closely monitored by medical professionals.

The Ministry of Education has dispatched a team of inspectors from Kampala to investigate and assess the situation at Kasana Junior Primary School. Their findings will contribute to understanding the circumstances leading to the tragic incident.
