Gulu Businesswoman Found Dead at Home, Police Probe Suspected Suicide

Police in Gulu City are investigating the suspected suicide of 52-year-old businesswoman Claire Nambooze, who was found dead at her home in Vanguard Cell, Laroo Pece Division.

According to Aswa West Regional Police Spokesperson David Ongom Mudong, Nambooze was discovered hanging inside her house on March 1, 2026, at around 4:00pm. The incident was reported to Gulu Central Police Station by her husband, Oola Christopher.

Mudong said preliminary information indicates that the deceased may have been struggling with financial pressure linked to loan repayments. Her husband reportedly told police that Nambooze had borrowed about six million shillings from four different financial institutions.

Relatives revealed that she had been operating a small breakfast business near her home. On the day of the incident, she is said to have left someone in charge of the business before returning home, where she was later found dead.

The LC I Chairperson of Vanguard Cell, Andrew Nyeko, described the incident as shocking and painful for the community. He said Nambooze was known as a hardworking and proactive resident who actively participated in community activities.

Nyeko added that the area has not recorded a similar case in more than two decades, noting that the last reported incident of that nature occurred in 2003.

Police have since visited and documented the scene, and the body was taken for postmortem examination as investigations continue.

Authorities have urged members of the public to seek support and guidance when facing overwhelming challenges and to look out for one another during difficult times.

Investigations into the exact circumstances surrounding Nambooze’s death are ongoing.
