Minister Amongi Betty Donates 25 Million UGX for Ngetta Babies Home Renovation

Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, Hon. Betty Amongi Akena, donated over 25 million shillings to Ngetta Babies Home on December 28, 2023. The contribution aims to support the renovation efforts of the home.

For nearly six months, Hon. Betty Amongi has been actively assisting the church in Lira City by providing cement, iron sheets, and financial support. In a vibrant fundraising event attended by numerous Christians from the Catholic denomination of Lira Diocese, she donated 5 million shillings in cash, purchased a bull for 3 million shillings, totaling 8 million shillings. Additionally, she pledged over 20 million shillings to be delivered later to Ngetta Babies Home.




Accompanied by Lira City East Division Mayor George Okello Ayoo, Dina Bua, and Anna Lumumba, Hon. Amongi also conveyed 1 million shillings given to Ngetta Babies Home by Hon. Micheal Jimmy Akena Obote, the Lira City East Division MP and UPC party president.




The fundraising event realized over 50 million shillings on December 28, 2023, dedicated to renovating Ngetta Babies Home.




Minister Amongi Betty highlighted that there are 21 babies homes managed by the Catholic church in the country, with the Anglican church having around seven, and a few centers belonging to the Pentecostal and other non-governmental organizations.

Mayor George Okello Ayoo praised Hon. Amongi as a distinguished woman of Lango, urging the people of Lango to collaborate with her as a politician committed to developing the region.

Betty emphasized the importance of proper adoption procedures, stating that children in such facilities should not stay beyond 18 years old. She commended Ngetta Babies Home and the Catholic church for supporting vulnerable children.




Referring to the teachings of Jesus in the book of Matthew, Hon. Betty Amongi Akena expressed her ministry’s willingness to assist Ngetta Babies Home and other centers nationwide in ensuring the welfare of children and securing necessary funding.

During the fundraising ceremony, notable contributors included Tecel Group (700,000 shillings), Hon. Denis Peter Odong Otul (100,000 shillings), Kole RDC (500,000 shillings), Daniel Omara Atubo (500,000 shillings), and Lira Catholic Diocese (over two million shillings).

Ngetta Babies Home, established in 1968, currently cares for children in three categories. In 1982, Mary Mother of the Church joined the effort, saving the lives of over 1,000 children who have since achieved success in various aspects of life. The center is currently managed by 12 board members.
