The Somali National Army (SNA), supported by international partners, dealt a significant blow to the al-Shabab terrorist group in a successful two-day military operation in the Mudug region of central Somalia. The offensive, led by SNA Chief Ibrahim Sheikh Muhidin, resulted in the death of 76 militants, including senior al-Shabab commanders, and several others sustained injuries.

“The al-Shabab terrorists suffered heavy casualties and lost 76 fighters during operations conducted in the past two days,” stated Muhidin, highlighting the effectiveness of the military campaign. The operations targeted al-Shabab bases and vehicles, contributing to the ongoing efforts to diminish the group’s presence in central and southern Somalia.

Muhidin emphasized the strategic progress made by government forces and their allies in dislodging al-Shabab from its strongholds. The extremist group, aligned with al-Qaida and seeking to overthrow the government, has faced sustained pressure from government forces and local militias in central Somalia.

Despite being ousted from Mogadishu in 2011, al-Shabab remains a resilient threat, capable of launching attacks on various targets, including government installations, hotels, restaurants, and public spaces. The recent successful military operations underscore the commitment to dismantling the group’s influence and enhancing security in the region.
