On Saturday, the aviation and public health community mourned the sudden and tragic loss of Dr. James Eyul, the in-charge of epidemics at Entebbe International Airport. The 54-year-old, who was also the proprietor of Kazuri Medical, a clinic providing port health services at the airport, lost his life in a car crash in Apac District.
Dr. Eyul, a seasoned aviation medicine and public health specialist, played a crucial role in managing epidemics at Entebbe International Airport. His untimely demise has left a void in the field, as he was recognized for his dedication to public health and aviation safety.
According to Mr. Vianney Luggya, the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson, Dr. Eyul had a notable career, serving as a captain for Lira Golf Club and later dedicating himself to the aviation and health sectors. His clinic, Kazuri Medical, became a key player in providing port health services at Entebbe Airport.
Tragedy struck as Dr. Eyul was returning from Lira, where he had gone to hand over his captaincy at Lira Golf Club. His vehicle broke down near Migera, and while waiting for a tow truck, a speeding truck collided with his car around 1 am on Saturday.
Survived by his wife, Pamela Eyul, and four children – Linda, Warren, Joy, and Wayne – Dr. Eyul’s contributions to the medical field were extensive. Starting as a medical officer at Nsambya Hospital, he later worked at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Tororo District and collaborated with various non-governmental organizations, including AMREF, during the LRA war in northern Uganda.
In February 2014, Dr. Eyul joined the airport and civil aviation as a public health and aviation medical specialist, where he served until his untimely death. Mr. Emmanuel Ainebyoona, the Ministry of Health spokesperson, described Dr. Eyul as a key staff member who played a vital role in managing health services at Entebbe International Airport.
Colleagues and former co-workers praised Dr. Eyul for his humility, understanding, and calm demeanor, even in challenging situations. Dr. Andrew Nsawotebba, the head of Entebbe Airport Health Laboratory, highlighted Dr. Eyul’s pivotal role during the Covid-19 pandemic, facilitating the safe recovery of the aviation industry in Uganda.
Dr. Eyul’s educational journey took him from Ibuje Primary School in Apac District to Aduku Secondary School and later Lango College for Advanced Level. He excelled at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, earning a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. Further studies at Heidelberg University in Germany and Kings College London earned him Master’s Degrees in Public Health and Aviation Medicine.
At the time of his tragic death, Dr. Eyul was pursuing a pilot’s license in Kajjansi, showcasing his commitment to continuous learning and multifaceted contributions to the aviation sector.
Burial arrangements for Dr. James Eyul are currently underway, and details will be communicated by the family.
