Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom is in a state of mourning following the demise of Prince Samuel Nyaika Amooti. The Chief Prince (Okwiri), Owek Mugenyi Fred Ruchunya, announced that Prince Nyaika passed away on the afternoon of January 9 at Mengo Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment. Born to Omukama Sir Tito Winyi Gafabusa IV, the late prince was a sibling to the reigning Omukama, Dr Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I, and shared the same father but had different mothers.

Reflecting on the character of Prince Nyaika, the Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Mr. Andrew Byakutaga, described him as a serene individual who never exploited his royal position for personal gain. Instead, the late prince demonstrated a genuine love for his kingdom and approached his responsibilities with determination. Mr. Byakutaga revealed that the prince had been facing health issues, was bedridden for some time, and eventually succumbed to complications arising from diabetes.

Chief Prince Owek Mugenyi Fred Ruchunya emphasized the late prince’s bravery and decisiveness, highlighting his courage in both speech and decision-making. Despite having temporarily resided in Kampala, Prince Nyaika returned to the kingdom when traditional monarchies were reinstated in 1993. Chief Prince Ruchunya noted the deceased’s forward-thinking nature and his commitment to legal action, even taking his brother to court at one point. Despite legal battles, Prince Nyaika held a deep love for the kingdom.

The Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom expressed a profound sense of loss, acknowledging that Prince Nyaika’s absence will be keenly felt. The burial ceremony for the late prince is scheduled for Thursday, January 11. His body will arrive from Kampala on Wednesday and will undergo a requiem service at St Peter’s Cathedral. Subsequently, the body will be transported to Kakindo-Kyamongi in Kyabigamibire sub-county, Hoima district, for a vigil.

On Thursday, the burial proceedings will commence with a church service at the deceased’s home, followed by the final interment at Mparo royal tombs, located approximately 5 kilometers from Hoima town along the Masindi road.
