‘New Appointments Alone Won’t Fix Economy,’ South Sudanese Tell Government

South Sudan President, Salva Kiir

JUBA, South Sudan – South Sudanese citizens have called on their government to implement comprehensive economic reforms, arguing that changing leaders alone will not resolve the country’s deepening financial challenges.

The calls come after President Salva Kiir urged urgent reforms at the Bank of South Sudan, a move aimed at addressing the country’s economic difficulties and restoring confidence in the financial sector.

Speaking during Eye Radio’s Dawn Show, members of the public said the government must go beyond leadership reshuffles and instead focus on strengthening financial institutions, enforcing laws that safeguard public resources, regulating the foreign exchange market, and rebuilding trust in the country’s banking system.

Many participants stressed that sustainable economic recovery can only be achieved through sound policies and effective institutions capable of managing the country’s finances transparently and efficiently.

“Even if the President appoints 1,000 central bank governors, nothing will change without proper laws to guide the country’s economy,” one caller said, emphasizing that meaningful reforms require structural changes rather than personnel replacements.

The public’s remarks reflect growing concern over South Sudan’s economic situation, which has been marked by inflation, currency instability, and declining public confidence in financial institutions.

Analysts say strengthening governance, improving accountability, and implementing long-term economic policies will be critical if the government is to restore stability and promote sustainable growth in the world’s youngest nation.

The renewed calls for reform come as authorities continue exploring measures to stabilise the economy and improve the performance of the country’s financial sector.
