The 17th edition of Ekisakate has commenced at St Juliana Senior Secondary School in Gayaza, Wakiso District, spanning sixteen days and estimated to draw over 400 participants. Organized by the Nabagereka Development Foundation, the event focuses on imparting emotional intelligence, mental health management, and practical skills, aligning with the theme “In Pursuit of Obuntu Bulamu.”
Andrew Adrian Mukiibi, the executive director of the Nabagereka Development Foundation, emphasized the significance of Ekisakate in promoting human values. The chosen theme reflects the realization that excellence is intertwined with individuals embracing the values of Obuntu Bulamu.
Throughout the event, participants will receive instruction in emotional intelligence, mental health management, and hands-on skills such as culinary preparation, art, and sports. The diverse curriculum aims to equip attendees with practical life skills.
In collaboration with MTN Uganda, the program extends its offerings to include computer skills like coding, cybersecurity, and social media management. Patricia Nabasirye, a representative from MTN, highlighted their commitment to mentoring participants on social skills, providing free coding classes, free internet broadband services, and a financial contribution of sh40m to support various activities.
Nurturing responsible ICT use is a focal point for Mukiibi, acknowledging both the benefits and risks associated with technology. The ICT lessons serve as a cornerstone in educating young individuals on responsible social media usage and ICT practices.
Sanga Lyambogo, the Princess of Buganda and chief guest at the event, emphasized Ekisakate’s pivotal role in shaping the moral values of Obuntu Bulamu and nurturing the younger generation of Uganda.
Offering a personal perspective, Nakanwagi Olivier, a 12-time participant in Ekisakate, attested to the positive impact of the event on her connection to cultural beliefs, social capital, and overall social life. Participating in Ekisakate has contributed to her personal growth and enhanced interpersonal relationships.
