Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party president, Mr. Jimmy Akena, paid respects to three deceased congressmen in Dokolo District as part of his mobilization tour leading up to the 2026 general elections. Mr. Akena, son of former president Milton Obote, joined other UPC leaders in visiting the graves of Dr. Syrlo Egwange, Adunia Olwol, and John Ojede Oryech, placing flowers at their resting places.
Dr. Egwange, a commissioner during Obote I administration, was buried in 1972 at their ancestral home village in Alwala, Bardyang Parish in Adok Sub-county. Adunia Olwol, a former escort of Obote, was laid to rest on February 2, 1982, in Agebo Cell, Agwata Town Council. John Ojede Oryech, a key figure in the struggle for independence, passed away on April 23, 2022, and was buried in Acandyang Village, Aneralibi Parish in the present Okwongodul Sub-county.
Mr. Akena, also the Lira City East Member of Parliament, expressed the significance of honoring those who contributed to Uganda’s independence, acknowledging the sacrifices made by these individuals. He emphasized the responsibility of the younger generation, born after independence, to transform the country for the better.
The UPC party president stated, “We are committed to making a better life for all citizens of Uganda, and that is the journey which we have embarked on.” He called for unity and a commitment to national progress, paying tribute to the departed congressmen and wishing their souls eternal peace.
Mr. Akena highlighted the purpose of his mobilization tour as preparing the ground for the UPC’s participation in the 2026 elections. He, along with other UPC leaders, addressed a gathering at Angwecibange Primary School in Dokolo Town, engaging with attendees and sharing his vision for a better Uganda.
During the rally, Mr. Akena addressed various issues affecting the region, focusing on the need for improved social amenities, quality education, and accessible health services. He stressed the importance of his leadership role in seeking solutions to these challenges, expressing a commitment to advocating for the interests of all citizens.
The mobilization effort aims to assure UPC members and supporters that the party is prepared for the upcoming elections. Mr. Akena’s candidacy and vision for a transformed Uganda have garnered support from party leaders and local figures, signaling a renewed focus on addressing the needs of the population.
