The Amuru district local government taskforce, responsible for implementing Presidential Executive Order Three on the eviction of Balaalo (cattle keepers), has received a double cabin Isuzu pick-up truck from the Office of the President. The vehicle, with registration number UG 4823C, aims to address logistical challenges faced by the district in carrying out eviction operations.
Amuru Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Stephen Odong Latek confirmed the receipt of the vehicle on Monday, highlighting the support from the Office of the President to strengthen the mobilization efforts of the taskforce. The donation is seen as part of routine activities to enhance the effectiveness of Balaalo eviction exercises.
The double cabin pick-up will be utilized by Amuru Deputy RDC, Proscovia Acham, facilitating mobility for the taskforce across the entire district. Since the initiation of Balaalo evictions, Amuru district has encountered logistical difficulties, and the provision of this vehicle is expected to contribute to the smoother implementation of the Presidential Executive Order.
In a recap of the latest eviction activities, the Amuru taskforce reported that a total of 2,233 illegal cattle belonging to non-compliant Balaalos had been impounded in the district over the last two-and-a-half months. The evictions primarily targeted the sub-counties of Atiak and Lakang, where Balaalos are predominantly located. Out of the impounded cattle, 2,060 had been completely evicted from Amuru district by January 12, 2024, according to the taskforce’s report on the second week of the second phase of evictions.
