Several delegates at the ongoing Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit have highlighted critical challenges facing member states, urging urgent attention. Food insecurity, armed conflict, pandemics, climate change, and terrorism are among the pressing issues that demand collective solutions, according to participants.
Uganda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gen. Jeje Odongo, emphasized the need for NAM member states to focus on finding solutions to persistent global problems. Addressing senior officials during the opening of the 19th NAM Summit, Odongo mentioned challenges such as armed conflicts, food insecurity, migration, unemployment, pandemics, climate change, and terrorism that require concerted efforts.
The summit, running from January 15 to January 20, aims to deepen cooperation for shared global affluence. The meeting of senior officials preceded the ministerial session and the gathering of heads of NAM member states.
The theme of this year’s summit is “Deepening Co-operation for Shared Global Affluence.” Gen. Jeje Odongo stressed the importance of addressing existing, new, and emerging issues collectively, considering challenges in financing for development and the burden of global debt that impacts the economic outlook.
The ministerial meeting and the heads of state session are scheduled to take place today.
