Patrick Amuriat Oboi, the president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, has issued a directive for all FDC flags across the country to be flown at half-mast until the burial of Cecilia Ogwal, the late Dokolo Woman legislator. The move is a tribute to Ogwal’s significant contributions to the party she co-founded. Ogwal passed away in an Indian hospital, prompting an outpouring of grief within the FDC.

Describing her as a mother figure, political mentor, and activist for Uganda’s betterment, Amuriat emphasized Ogwal’s role in mentoring and nurturing young politicians. He recalled their association since 1996 when she rallied support for Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere against President Museveni. Amuriat engaged with her after the last general election, urging her to reconsider her decision not to seek re-election.

Amuriat appealed for calm in Ogwal’s constituency and expressed the hope that the party would be granted the opportunity to have her body lie in state at their party headquarters in Najjanakumbi, Kampala. He highlighted the shock within the FDC, noting that they last met her on December 16, 2023, during a retreat for new FDC leaders, where she spoke to the new leadership.

Alice Alaso, the acting national coordinator for the Alliance for National Transformation party, also paid tribute to Ogwal, describing her as a dedicated and patriotic leader. Alaso highlighted Ogwal’s support for their party when they broke away from the FDC, both financially and in providing political advice. She emphasized Ogwal’s role as a voice of reason, bringing direction to challenging situations, calling the NRM and Parliament into order.

According to Aalso, the passing of Cecilia Ogwal marks a significant loss for the opposition and the country, with many acknowledging her contributions beyond party lines.
