Stakeholders are urging the Ugandan government to prioritize investments in healthcare infrastructure to tap into the growing global medical tourism industry, . Despite Uganda’s potential as a medical tourism destination, recent statistics from the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) reveal a significant gap, with fewer than 1000 medical tourists visiting the country in 2021, compared to over 10,000 Ugandans seeking specialized medical care abroad.

Mr. Ian Youngman, a medical travel analyst, highlighted the economic significance of medical tourism, emphasizing that countries with a robust healthcare system can generate substantial revenue from this sector. He emphasized the need for Uganda to focus on the quality and profitability of medical tourism, rather than solely on visitor numbers.

Drawing attention to global trends, Mr. Sherif Beshara, CEO of American Hospital Dubai, stressed the importance of innovation, high healthcare standards, and collaborations in enhancing Uganda’s international reputation as a medical tourism destination. He emphasized that a strong healthcare infrastructure would not only attract medical tourists but also enhance the country’s overall global standing in the healthcare sector.

Mr. Beshara outlined the key elements necessary for Uganda to establish itself as a premier global medical tourism destination, including delivering high-quality healthcare services, providing distinctive patient experiences, and launching strategic initiatives to attract international visitors.

By investing in healthcare innovation and infrastructure, Uganda can begin to build international trust in its healthcare sector and position itself as a competitive player in the global medical tourism market. This strategic approach not only promises economic benefits but also fosters advancements in healthcare delivery and accessibility for both domestic and international patients.
