As Uganda approaches the 2026 general elections, the youth league of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has initiated a mobilization campaign in support of party chairman and incumbent President Museveni. Named the Yellow Youth Movement (YYM), this initiative seeks to invigorate the participation of youth within the NRM party in preparation for the upcoming polls.
Jacob Eyeru, the chairperson of the NRM National Youth Council, highlighted the objectives of the YYM, emphasizing its focus on key areas such as advocating for quality and compulsory free education, ensuring healthcare accessibility for all Ugandans, and promoting vocational skills training among youths. He underscored the importance of these initiatives in fostering sustainable development for the youth of Uganda, aligning with the party’s agenda of wealth and job creation.
During the launch of YYM at the NRM secretariat in Kampala, Eyeru articulated the movement’s commitment to mobilizing youth from across Uganda to join the NRM party, emphasizing the role of steady progress under President Museveni’s leadership.
Furthermore, Eyeru cautioned youth against engaging in activities that do not align with the NRM party’s objectives unless sanctioned by President Museveni. He highlighted the presence of opposition political parties and emphasized the leadership expertise of President Museveni, contrasting it with the purported lack thereof in other groups.
While various initiatives have emerged to support President Museveni’s candidacy for the 2026 elections, including efforts led by the Office of the National Chairman (ONC), calls for a peaceful transition of power have also surfaced. Justice Minister Norbert Mao recently urged President Museveni to facilitate a peaceful handover of power, emphasizing the importance of stability and continuity in Uganda’s governance.
