Dutch golfer Darius Van Driel secured victory in the 2024 DP World Tour Magical Kenya Open, clinching the title with an impressive performance of 14 under par, totaling 270 in a thrilling finale at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi.

Van Driel, aged 34, delivered a remarkable final round, carding a score of 67 to secure a two-shot win and claim his maiden victory on the DP World Tour within his 112th appearance at the Kenya Open. His triumph was a testament to his skill and resilience in a competitive field, earning him a prize of $425,000 (approximately USh1.6 billion).

Amidst the excitement of Van Driel’s victory, Ronald Rugumayo, representing Uganda and East Africa, made history by becoming the first Ugandan to successfully make the cut in the prestigious DP World Tour. Rugumayo, hailing from Kabarole in Western Uganda, showcased commendable performance throughout the tournament, finishing 71st on the final day.

Rugumayo’s journey in the Kenya Open was marked by moments of brilliance, including 13 birdies, although an equal number of bogeys meant he concluded his campaign towards the lower end of the leaderboard in the battle for prize money.

Reflecting on his achievement, Rugumayo expressed his hope that his performance and milestone would serve as inspiration for aspiring golfers in the region. He emphasized his commitment to nurturing talent and envisioned a future where more Ugandans and East Africans would excel in major golf tournaments.

Currently ranked 2,901st in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), Rugumayo has previously participated in South Africa’s prestigious Sunshine Tour. This marked his third professional appearance in the Magical Kenya Open, following his participation in the 2017 edition of the tournament as an amateur.

Rugumayo’s presence in Kenya was made possible through sponsorship by Absa Bank Uganda, which supported a team of 10 golfers, alongside nine amateurs, to compete in the tournament. Mumba Kalifungwa, Managing Director of Absa Bank Uganda, highlighted the significance of Rugumayo’s achievement in elevating Ugandan golf and emphasized the bank’s commitment to empowering African talent and stories.
