The officer is accused of orchestrating a revenge attack resulting in the shooting to death of Simon Omona, a resident of Lulayi village.
Acaye, purportedly seeking retribution for his brother’s demise, allegedly discharged his firearm at Omona, who later succumbed to his injuries.
Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said: “Authorities in the North West Nile Region and Adjumani CPS are on high alert as they pursue Acaye, a Police officer implicated in a tragic incident of revenge-driven violence”.
Acaye, stationed as the Officer in Charge (OC) at Alebtong district, stands accused of perpetrating a fatal shooting targeting Omona, a 24-year-old resident of Lulayi village, according to Enanga.
He said the harrowing incident unfolded on February 20, 2024, at approximately 11:00am., when Acaye reportedly departed from his duty station armed with a pistol.
“His stated mission was to seek justice for his brother, Opio Emmanuel, who fell victim to a mob attack on February 10, 2024. Acaye, accompanied by a team of officers, responded to a sighting of one of the suspects at Apaa trading centre,” Enanga said.
Upon arriving at the scene, Acaye, allegedly drew his firearm and discharged it at Omona, critically injuring him.
Despite efforts to rush Omona to a nearby clinic for medical treatment, he tragically succumbed to his wounds, according to Enanga.
Subsequently, he relinquished possession of the pistol before disappearing, prompting a widespread manhunt by law enforcement authorities.
The alleged actions of Acaye, entrusted with the responsibility to protect and serve the community, have sparked outrage and condemnation.
His deviation from the principles of law enforcement represents a betrayal of the oath he swore to uphold, as his use of excessive force resulted in the unnecessary loss of life.
In a statement addressing the incident, Enanga expressed the force’s remorse to the family, friends, and loved ones of the victim, acknowledging the profound impact of Omona’s alleged actions.
They reassured the public of their unwavering commitment to apprehend Acaye and bring him to justice for charges including murder and theft of a police motorcycle.
