The decomposing body of Police Constable Sadik Hussein Baguma, stationed at Kisoga-Seeta Police Station under Mukono Division, was discovered in his room at Namanve Police Barracks. Baguma’s tragic death appears to be linked to the misappropriation of funds belonging to a suspect in police custody.
Reports indicate that Baguma failed to hand over approximately 800,000 shillings, which belonged to a suspect, to the police store. Instead, he allegedly used the money for betting purposes, resulting in significant losses. Despite his efforts to recover the lost funds, including seeking assistance from relatives and threatening drastic measures if unsuccessful, Baguma remained unsuccessful.
On the eighth of the month, neighbors in the barracks detected a foul odor emanating from Baguma’s room. Upon investigation, they discovered his decomposing body hanging from a bedsheet tied around his neck. While the circumstances strongly suggest suicide, investigations are underway to confirm the cause of death.
Police authorities have expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing that mishandling of custody funds is strictly prohibited. Custodial funds are intended for use within police stations and should not be taken off-site by officers.
