On Thursday, March 14, 2024, the Jinja road police commander was suspended from his duties. This action came in the wake of alleged domestic violence issues that culminated in the shooting of his ex-wife two weeks prior. The senior superintendent of police (SSP) Julius Ahimbisibwe’s ex-wife sustained injuries as a result of the shooting incident.
Brigadier Jesse Kamunanwire, the police director of Human Resource Administration, communicated SSP Ahimbisibwe’s suspension in a message distributed to all police units. The suspension was declared pending further investigations into the matter. Consequently, Superintendent of Police (SP) Patrick Opio has been appointed as the new commander of the Jinja Road Police Station, taking over from SSP Ahimbisibwe. SP Opio previously served as the District Police Commander (DPC) for Kagadi District. Additionally, SP Hussein Mugalura, who recently completed an intermediate course, has been assigned as the new Kagadi District Police Commander.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the police spokesperson regarding the situation proved futile, as it aligns with their policy to refrain from discussing internal changes. Meanwhile, it has been reported that since the shooting incident, personnel from the Professional Standards Unit have been attempting to reach SSP Ahimbisibwe to gather his account of the events. However, their efforts have been unsuccessful thus far. Officers purportedly visited his residence on Masaka Road but were unable to locate him.
This unfortunate incident underscores a concerning trend of senior police officers allegedly misusing their firearms, contributing to growing concerns about accountability and adherence to professional conduct within law enforcement agencies across the country.
