The trial of Amon Natwebembera, the principal agricultural officer of Bushenyi District accused of failing to declare property valued at shillings one billion, is scheduled to recommence on Friday, March 15, 2024.
The Kampala-based Anti-Corruption Court, presided over by Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga, had adjourned Natwebembera’s case to March 15 for further hearing after initial proceedings on January 22, 2024.
Natwebembera, along with Bushenyi businessman Herbert Gumisiriza, faces charges related to the alleged concealment of property and deceptive dealings.
Prosecution’s Allegations:
The prosecution team, led by Phillip Munaba and Wycliff Mutabule, contends that Natwebembera amassed property worth shillings one billion during his tenure as the principal agricultural officer, a sum disproportionate to his known income.
Furthermore, Natwebembera is accused of presenting false documents to the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) investigators, attempting to mislead them regarding the ownership of a piece of land in Mbarara.
Legal Implications:
If found guilty, Natwebembera could face a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment or a fine of shillings 4.8 million, or both, for illicit enrichment. Gumisiriza, charged with dealing in suspect property, could face a maximum sentence of seven years in jail.
The trial underscores the legal ramifications of alleged corruption and deceptive practices within public service and private dealings.
