The Uganda Police Force, specifically the territorial police in Bukedi South and Busia CPS, is currently conducting investigations into an incident involving the attack on Customs and Law Enforcement Personnel while on lawful duty. The incident occurred on 12th March 2024 at approximately 11:30 am in Busia town. According to preliminary findings, the URA customs officials, supported by the UPDF, were engaged in an intelligence-led operation that led to the recovery of smuggled drugs at the residence of Ibra, also known as Paskali, in Arubaine “A” village, Busia district.
Upon their return with the seized contraband, they encountered a hostile mob that began pelting them with stones. In response to the escalating situation, the task team called for backup, prompting additional security personnel from the Counter Terrorism unit and UPDF to swiftly respond from the URA Customs Office. To disperse the volatile crowd, the Joint Security Task Team resorted to firing warning shots into the air, leading to the dispersal of the mob.
Regrettably, amidst the dispersal, a 14-year-old male juvenile named Ojiambo Dickson sustained a gunshot wound in the stomach. He was promptly provided with First Aid at Busia Health Centre IV and subsequently transferred to Mbale Hospital for further medical attention. Fortunately, his condition is reported to be stable, and he is out of danger. Several cartridges were recovered from the scene, and the victim was issued with police medical forms to document his injuries.
The Uganda Police Force condemns the smuggling of goods and condemns the aggressive behavior displayed towards Customs and Law Enforcement personnel carrying out their lawful duties. The unprovoked attack on officers is unacceptable, and such acts of violence must cease immediately. These officers demonstrate dedication, vigilance, and professionalism in their service to the country, often facing significant risks in the line of duty. When they are subjected to attacks, it is imperative for swift action to be taken.
Efforts are underway to apprehend the suspects involved in the attack, and they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The Uganda Police Force emphasizes the importance of respecting the rule of law and urges the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and order in the community.
