The Chief of Military Intelligence, Major General James Birungi, has inaugurated the languages wing and officially commenced the Arabic and Chinese language courses. These courses, conducted in collaboration with the Makerere University School of Languages, will take place at the School of Military Intelligence in Nakasongala district.
Major General Birungi commended the partnership between Makerere University and the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) for this significant initiative. He described it as a crucial milestone for both the UPDF fraternity and the nation as a whole.
Addressing the importance of effective communication skills in today’s globalized world, Major General Birungi emphasized the need to navigate multicultural partnerships without ambiguity or misunderstanding. He noted the role of advancements in technology and globalization in presenting both opportunities and challenges that necessitate proficient communication skills.
Encouraging the participants, Major General Birungi urged them to approach the courses with focus and a positive attitude. He emphasized that the training would equip them with essential skills such as interpretation, translation, and expertise in cultural matters, enabling them to excel in their respective roles.
Colonel James Muhumuza, the Commandant of the School, outlined the course’s objectives, aiming to produce proficient linguists capable of reading, listening, writing, speaking, and translating effectively. He highlighted the historical significance of language as a tool for unity and its role in various contexts, including biblical narratives.
Dr. Gilbert Gumoshabe, Director of the Confucius Institute at Makerere University, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the development of the new language curriculum. He emphasized the importance of acquiring knowledge in foreign languages beyond English, underscoring the significance of diverse linguistic skills in a globalized world.
The launch event was attended by various dignitaries, including Brigadier General Bonny Wolimbwa, Commandant of the Kaweweta Recruit Training School, Brigadier General Tom Kabuye, Brigadier General Kenneth Shillingi, Asaba Charles, and Dr. Zhong Jianghua, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at Makerere University.
