The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety of the Uganda Police Force has launched a campaign to educate and increase awareness about road safety among school children.
SP Kananura Mike, the Traffic spokesperson, along with a team from the Police headquarters, visited Luwero district today. They engaged with various schools to educate and sensitize them about road safety. The campaign is being conducted under the theme “community involvement in road safety.”
This initiative specifically focuses on primary school children. Its goal is to provide them with the necessary knowledge on how to stay safe while using roads. During the sessions with the students, SP Kananura emphasized the importance of certain safety measures.
He advised schools to avoid overcrowding children in their transportation vans. Additionally, he recommended that the vans should be properly branded with reflectors for better visibility. Moreover, it was stressed that drivers must possess valid driving permits with the appropriate classes.
The aim of these recommendations is to ensure the safety of school children during transportation. Overloading vans can be dangerous and increase the risk of accidents. Proper branding and reflectors enhance visibility, especially during low light conditions. Valid driving permits guarantee that drivers are qualified to operate the vehicles safely.
According to SP Kananura Mike, by educating both schools and students about these safety measures, the Uganda Police hopes to reduce road accidents involving school children.
The campaign emphasizes the importance of community involvement in promoting road safety, with the traffic spokesperson highlighting the collective responsibility to ensure the well-being of all road users, especially vulnerable groups like children.
