On Thursday, April 18, 2024, a disturbing incident unfolded at Kabale central market, where a 47-year-old security guard was shot while allegedly attempting to steal food items. The Kigezi regional police spokesperson, Mr. Elly Maate, identified the individual involved as Andrew Muhwezi, employed by Securiko Uganda Ltd and a resident of Nyakahita cell, Kyanamira sub-county in Kabale District.

According to Mr. Maate’s statement, the incident occurred around 2 am when Muhwezi, armed with a rifle loaded with five rounds of ammunition, reportedly entered the Kabale central main market. There, he allegedly robbed three individuals—Gloria Kyomuhangi, Zaudia Natukunda, and Allen Kyoheirwe—of various merchandise valued at Shs440,000. The stolen items included sweet bananas, oranges, onions, fresh beans, apples, and peas.

However, alertness from a police officer stationed in the area prevented the situation from escalating further. Upon noticing Muhwezi carrying a bag, the officer instructed him to halt, but Muhwezi attempted to flee instead. Despite a warning shot fired by the officer, Muhwezi persisted in his escape attempt. When eventually confronted, he reportedly aimed his gun at the officer, prompting the officer to act swiftly and shoot Muhwezi in the leg. Muhwezi was subsequently arrested and transported to Kabale regional referral hospital for treatment, while investigations into the incident continue.

The incident has been officially recorded as a case of aggravated robbery at Kabale police station under CRB:323/2024. In response to the incident, Mr. Julius Turinawe, chairman of the Fresh Food Vendors group at Kabale central market, commended the actions of the police officer, PC Muhumuza George, for apprehending the suspect. Turinawe expressed hope that such actions would serve as a deterrent to potential criminals, thus ensuring the safety of traders and their goods at the market.
