Security guards in Jinja intervened in a foiled robbery attempt at the Abyssinia Iron and Steel Factory, resulting in the death of one suspected thug and the arrest of another. The incident unfolded on Saturday night at 9:00 PM local time.

According to a statement from James Mubi, the spokesperson for the Kiira Region Police, the deceased was part of a group of criminals who infiltrated the guarded factory premises with the intention of stealing scrap metal. When confronted by the security guards, the suspects attempted to flee, prompting the guards to open fire. One suspect, identified as Reagan, was fatally shot, while another, identified as 24-year-old John Buwale, was apprehended.

Mubi explained that the police are actively pursuing other individuals who managed to escape the scene. Despite the arrest and recovery of stolen scrap metal, efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend the remaining suspects.

The deceased, Reagan, and the apprehended suspect, John Buwale, both hailed from the Walukuba-Danida area in Jinja City. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges of criminal activity in certain areas, particularly in slum areas like Walukuba-Danida and Masese, which continue to be identified as hotspots for criminal activity in and around Jinja City.

As investigations continue and security measures are heightened, local authorities and law enforcement agencies are working diligently to address the underlying issues contributing to crime in the region and ensure the safety and security of residents and businesses in Jinja.
