Bukwo, Uganda – Farmers in Bukwo district in the Sebei region have, for the first time, tasted the sweetness of fish from their own land. While Bukwo and Sebei at large have always enjoyed fish from natural lakes, with the support from the Ministry of Water and Environment, Bukwo farmers yesterday enjoyed fish from their own fish ponds constructed by the Ministry.
Speaking to the media, Priscilla Chemutai hailed the Ministry of Water for introducing fish farming in Bukwo, something they didn’t believe would work. “All along, I thought fish could only thrive in black soil, but now it can be kept in any soil. We are very happy,” she said.
Patrick Cherotic, another farmer, said they would like the Ministry of Water to create more ponds for various farmers in different sub-counties so they can improve their feeding diet and make money.
Last year, the Ministry of Water and Environment stocked thousands of fish fillets, which are now being sold by locals.
