Tusiime Godfrey, a 38-year-old resident of Bwezibwera in Kiboga District, has been brought before the court on charges of impersonating a Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) officer and deceiving individuals into parting with money.

The prosecution, represented by Hilda Atusimiire, the Acting Supervisor of Prosecution, and Aliddeki Ssali Alex, the Acting Manager of Customs and NTR Prosecution at URA, informed the court that the accused engaged in unlawful activities in Kasanda District between March 2024 and April 2024. During this period, Tusiime purported to be a URA official and conducted compliance checks on Unvira Mumaana Enterprises (SMS Ltd).

According to Atusimiire, Tusiime managed to obtain UGX 3 million from Ssebunje Sulaiman, the proprietor of Unvira Mumaana Enterprises, by falsely promising to facilitate the clearance of digital tax stamps.

These actions are in violation of sections 198(a) and (b) of the East Africa Community Customs Management Act 2014, and section 305 of the Penal Code Act, cap 120.

During the court proceedings, Tusiime’s request for bail was denied by His Worship Christopher Opit. The court deemed his sureties inadequate, citing a lack of evidence regarding their employment and business status.

“Your sureties are not deemed substantial as they have failed to provide proof of their employment and business. Therefore, your application for bail is rejected,” ruled His Worship Christopher Opit.

Tusiime has been remanded in custody until May 14, 2024, pending further legal proceedings.
