Police in Buhweju are investigating circumstances under which MP Francis Mwijukye was assaulted by a group of people.
Hon. Mwijukye, the Member of Parliament for Buhweju constituency, was assaulted at Rwanyamabare Catholic Parish, Nyakishana Subcounty, Buhweju West Constituency, Buhweju District, when he visited the church, according to his brother, Saveriono Nayebare.
“On May 12th, 2024, Hon. Mwijukye Francis attended Sunday Service at Rwanyamabare Catholic Church, Buhweju West Constituency, Nyakishana Subcounty, in Buhweju District, where a group of worshippers from the Rwanyamabare Farmers Association informed him that their church is at risk of being removed from its place by Kamugisha Frank, a neighbor who claims ownership of the land,” reported Nayebare.
“After mass, the Honorable, accompanied by a group of people, attempted to visit a part of the land which was fenced by Kamugisha Frank. They encountered a group of people armed with sticks, leading to a confrontation and ensuing fight. The Honorable was beaten and sustained a head injury,” added the brother.
Martial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, adding that Hon. Mwijukye Francis was rescued from the scene by the police and taken to Nsiika Health Center 4 for medical attention.
Tumusiime revealed that a case of assault was registered, statements were recorded from some witnesses, though arrests are yet to be made.
According to Tumusiime, the matter of the land, claimed by both Frank Kamugisha and the Rwanyamabare Farmers Association, is before the District Security Committee headed by the RDC of Buhweju.
