At the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) headquarters in Mbuya, the Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs (Defence), Hon. Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, lauded the strong relationship between the Czech Republic and Uganda. She highlighted the cooperation between the two countries, particularly in defence, security, trade, and investment. Hon. Nyirabashitsi emphasized the significance of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation signed between the two nations on July 10, 2021, which serves as a framework for collaboration in the defence and security sectors.
During the meeting, Minister Nyirabashitsi held discussions with Ms. Katerina Sequensova, the Director General for Non-European Countries, Economic and Development Cooperation of the Czech Republic. Expressing optimism about the bilateral relations, Nyirabashitsi anticipated that the partnership would foster growth, development, and prosperity for both countries. She also proposed extending cooperation into other areas such as health, infrastructure, and agriculture development.
Ms. Sequensova conveyed appreciation for Uganda’s contributions to regional security, acknowledging the country’s efforts in stabilizing the region. She recognized Uganda’s hosting of a significant number of refugees and its impact on various sectors such as housing, healthcare, and education. Sequensova reiterated the Czech Republic’s commitment to enhancing the relationship between the two countries, particularly in the defence sector.
Accompanying Ms. Sequensova were Ambassador Nicol Adamcová, the Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Uganda, Mr. Stephen Kaboyo, Mr. Jan Spiler, Chief of Intergovernmental Defence Cooperation Lt. Col. Borijov Jurenka, the Military and Air Defence Attaché, and Mr. Vaclav Prasil, Director of Sub-Saharan Africa.
The meeting was attended by Ugandan officials including Commander Defence Ordnance Brig Gen Solomon Amanya and Chief Policy, Strategy and Planning Brig Gen Irumba Tingira, among others. The engagement marked a significant step towards strengthening diplomatic ties and fostering collaboration between Uganda and the Czech Republic in various sectors, particularly in defence and security.
