Locals from Kashambya sub-county in Rukiga District expressed significant dissatisfaction on May 31, 2024, over unfulfilled presidential pledges, particularly the tarmacking of the Muhanga-Kisizi Road.

They voiced their concerns at Kantaare playground in Rutengye parish, Kashambya sub-county, during the Rukiga District Empowerment program organized by the Office of the National Chairman.

Among the activities were Talent and Skills Development, Wealth Creation Talks, Exhibitions, a Health Camp, Financial Literacy, Agricultural Talks, Music, and more.

The locals, led by Alineo Bandaganiire, the local council chairman for Kashambya sub-county, stated that Kigezi lacks coffee and milk processing machines. He requested the utilization of the Rushebeya Kisizi swamp, where farmers have previously sourced school fees before a presidential directive.

He further noted that locals from Kashambya sub-county, who voted overwhelmingly for the NRM government, are dissatisfied with the long-standing unfulfilled pledge to tarmac the Muhanga-Kisizi road.

Rukiga District LC5 Chairperson Robert Mbabazi Kakwerere mentioned that in 2006, President Museveni pledged to have the Muhanga-Kisizi road tarmacked, but to date, nothing has changed.

He expressed concern about how the ban on recruiting workers has severely impacted service delivery in the district, noting that most schools in Rukiga are understaffed.

He also demanded a technical school in Rukiga, stating that students have to travel long distances from Rukiga to Kabale.

Rukiga District Woman MP Hon. Kamusiime Caroline Muhwezi said she raises the issue of the Muhanga-Kisizi Road with the president whenever she meets him.

She requested that the Senior Presidential Advisor on Political Affairs in the Office of the NRM National Chairman (ONC) amplify her plea to the president regarding the Muhanga-Kisizi Road.

SPA Hajjat Hadijah Uzeiye Namyalo, the Senior Presidential Advisor on Political Affairs in the Office of the NRM National Chairman (ONC), said she received calls from Rukiga District threatening her against coming.

She further criticized the Parish Development Model, stating that most beneficiaries are illiterate and unable to read or write documents.

The Rukiga District parliamentary hopeful Dr. Silvia Arineitwe Mwanakyi, who was the chief mobilizer for the Rukiga District Empowerment program, commended President Museveni for promoting development at the grassroots level.
