SCP Enanga Fred, the Police Spokesperson, announced on June 4th, 2024, that the Territorial Police in Adjumani had apprehended two suspects for setting up an illegal roadblock and extorting money from locals in Indriani village, Lewa Parish, Adjumani. This incident occurred on May 30th, 2024. The suspects used a makeshift barrier made of nails to block the road and targeted businessmen and charcoal dealers traveling from Zoka to Kampala, claiming to enforce a ban on charcoal transportation.
The suspects were identified as Baguma George Ijjo, a 36-year-old boda boda rider from Deri village, and Bongomi Bara Rodgers, a 28-year-old resident of Odraji village. They were caught with a motorcycle registered under the Ministry of Gender and Labour with the number Ug 0480Y. The makeshift barrier was also seized. Efforts are underway to locate and assist the victims who were subjected to torture by the group. A statement has been taken from Nkalubo Muhammad at Lacor Hospital.
This gang was responsible for both the illegal roadblock and various robberies in the area. Among the suspects was a youth leader who participated in the extortion activities. It is believed that the arrest of these individuals will contribute to restoring peace in the region.
The public, especially transporters and traders, are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior to the police. The operation to address these issues is ongoing.
