Police stations in Kampala receive several reports each week of mothers abandoning their newborns in pit latrines and water channels.

A 19-year-old woman named Diana Kobusiime has been arrested for allegedly dumping her newborn baby in a pit latrine shortly after giving birth. The incident took place in Nakifuma village in Mukono District.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, reported that this is not an isolated case. Police stations in Kampala receive several reports each week of mothers abandoning their newborns in pit latrines and water channels.




Owoyesigyire emphasized the urgent need for counselling and support services for young mothers to prevent such distressing incidents. He stressed that addressing the mental health needs of these young women is crucial to curbing this troubling trend.




While addressing journalists at the Police Headquarters, Owoyesigyire highlighted the importance of prioritizing mental health and providing necessary support services. This approach is essential in helping young mothers make better decisions and preventing the abandonment of newborns.




The police are working to raise awareness about this issue and to offer the necessary resources and support to young mothers, aiming to reduce the frequency of these heartbreaking incidents.
