The territorial police in Lira City West Division have been shocked by the alleged suicide of a headteacher at Okio Primary School in Aromo Sub-County, Lira District.
This follows a report received by the Lira City West Division police from Bua Moses, aged 41, the LC1 chairperson of Anai, Agali Cell, Lira City.
According to SP Okema Jimmy Patrick, the Police Public Relations Officer for North Kyoga Region, it is alleged that on the night of 24th June 2024 around 01:00 hours, Umar Shadick, the Headteacher of Okio Primary School in Aromo Sub-County, left his house briefly while his wife, only identified as Sharafina, was sleeping. Umar allegedly did not return until around 07:00 hours, when he was found dead, hanging from a mango tree a few meters away from his house.
A team of police officers from Lira City West Division Police responded to the scene, led by the homicide unit and other officers.
The deceased’s body was picked up and taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
“It’s a very unfortunate incident, and we are keen on understanding the circumstances following the postmortem report,” stated Okema.
Police have appealed for calm from the deceased’s relatives and asked them to be patient and await the postmortem report, which will guide the next steps.
