President Yoweri Museveni, also the NRM national chairman, praised Aleper as a martyr who dedicated his life to the development of Karamoja.

Leaders from the Karamoja sub-region gathered for a special council meeting to honor the late Simon Peter Aleper, former MP for Moroto Municipality, who died in a road accident on July 23, 2024. The session took place on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Boma Grounds in Naitakwai, Moroto Municipality.

Aleper, who was serving as the vice chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) for Karamoja at the time of his death, was remembered for his significant contributions to the region’s development. The meeting was attended by leaders from Karamoja’s nine districts—Kotido, Kaabong, Karenga, Nabilatuk, Abim, Moroto, Napak, Amudat, and Nakapiripirit—along with members of the NRM central executive committee, MPs, and other dignitaries.

President Yoweri Museveni, also the NRM national chairman, praised Aleper as a martyr who dedicated his life to the development of Karamoja. During a memorial service at the NRM Secretariat in Kampala on July 26, Museveni highlighted Aleper’s efforts to attract investment to the region. He recalled Aleper’s role in facilitating the donation of 500 acres of land for a cement factory, which was crucial in overcoming local resistance and promoting economic growth.

President Museveni noted that Aleper often traveled late at night to manage his many responsibilities for his community. He emphasized that Aleper’s work had significantly advanced the region, helping Karamoja rise from poverty and develop industrial hubs. Museveni urged mourners to trust in God as they cope with the loss and move forward.

According to the Busoga East Police statement, Aleper’s death was the result of a hit-and-run accident on the Iganga-Tirinyi highway. The incident occurred around 1:00am near Bukoona when Aleper’s Toyota V8 collided with an unidentified vehicle.
